Pretty Little Spring Things

Now don't get me wrong, I love winter. I love jeans and leggings, boots and coats, scarves and hats just as much as the next snow bunny. However, there is something about the color pallet of spring and summer that just makes you want to smile. A few pretty little spring things that make me smile...

Now if Houston weather would just follow suit...

The Best Kind of Spring Break [The Married Kind]

Have you heard? Teachers look forward to Spring Break more than students. You probably have. It's true... or at least just as much as students. Matt and I were especially excited this year, because not only was I going to have a week off, but we had a trip planned! Whenever we get on a plane to travel somewhere, I feel like it is to go to the West Coast. California is a go-to. However, we had our first trip planned to the East Coast.

One thing I just have to note is how early Matt schedules flights. It is a little bit outrageous for vacation. No human should have to be awake and moving at 3:00 AM. It is just a little cruel. But, nonetheless, we were excited--whether it looked as if we were or not.

There was, however, one member of the family who was less than enthused that we were leaving...
Lucky for her, my parents are awesome dog-sitters, and they took great care of her.

We flew into Charlottesville, Virginia, and the first thing I noticed was all of the snow on the ground. I'm sure the locals were sick of seeing snow, but we were pumped. I kept asking Matt if I could run and play in the snow, but we both agreed that I needed to be mature around all of the people who would be watching and wondering how old I was. I borrowed snow boots from my mom last minute, and boy was I glad! I wore them the whole time we were in Charlottesville.
The University of Virginia (UVA) is located in Charlottesville, so we got to see the campus, which is gorgeous, especially surrounded by blankets of white snow. And of course, I had to see the Pi Phi house while there, and it was also beautiful. All of the buildings and houses seemed to match--old red brick.

If you did not know, UVA was founded by Thomas Jefferson, and Charlottesville was home to Jefferson and his family. Actually 5,000 acres of it was his home. Monticello. He began construction on Monticello in 1768. He continued to add on to and remodel Monticello throughout his time there, including during his presidency from 1801-1809. Because we were in the area, we wanted to go and take a tour, and we were so glad we did. It was amazing to be standing inside of the house and to think of all of the ideas that were thought of, all of the conversations that were had, and all of the influential people that walked in that home. Not to mention, the grounds were incredible, even on a dreary day.

And.. I finally got to play in the snow. We figured that technically it was someone's backyard, so it was meant to be played in. Only... it was a former president's backyard. And it made it that much better!

Here we are with TJ, himself...

After seeing Monticello, we left Charlottesville, Virginia, and we drove south to Durham, North Carolina. Home of the Blue-Devils. But more important, home to the Durham Bulls, which is the minor league baseball team that Matt's dad played for after playing for Texas A&M University. The Durham Bulls are one of the most famous minor league teams, partly because of the movie "Bull Durham" that was made based on their team. Matt has always heard stories of his dad playing in Durham, but had never seen the park and had always wanted to. Before checking into our hotel, we drove to the stadium. It is currently undergoing a major renovation but is promised to be complete before opening day in April.

On the back side of the bull, which faces the inside of the stadium, the same image of the bull appears, but with huge lettering that says, "Hit bull, win steak. Hit grass, win salad." We thought that was pretty hilarious.

We were sad to be there at a time when the Bulls were not playing (they are at Spring Training), but we are hoping to go back to see them play, and hopefully taking Matt's dad with us! That night, we explored Downtown Durham, and we found the coolest little local restaurant that was [almost] world famous for its chicken and waffles, called Dame's Chicken and Waffles. You choose your type of waffle, chicken, smear, drizzle, and then a side. It was as southern as you can get. And delicious. Note: We are obviously not cleansing right now :)

Located close to Durham, you have Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The three cities are known as "The Research Triangle" or more commonly just "The Triangle." Each of the three cities is home to the following universities, consecutively: Duke, UNC, and NC State. We absolutely loved this part of the country. Being from Texas, where it takes hours to get to another city, it was fun to be able to explore different ones all within about 20 minutes (or less) of each other.

Favorite architecture: Durham's Duke University.
The gothic look of the buildings are unbelievable. There is truly no other way to describe it. The pictures I took were at night, and do not do the Duke chapel justice in the least. Still beautiful, though.

Favorite town: Chapel Hill
This place was precious (for lack of a better, more fitting word). It was a cute little college town with young people all over the place. Right across from campus was a street lined with different shops and restaurants. And behind that, the sorority houses. UNC had my favorite house I've seen so far, other than ours, of course. On the night before leaving, we ate pizza in Chapel Hill, and then stopped for some Gigi's Cupcakes. The diet starts tomorrow, am-I-right?

This, unfortunately, ended our trip.
Back to reality starting tomorrow.
Until our next trip!
The Bormanns take Boston... in April!

Did you do anything fun for Spring Break?

Pi Day

Happy Pi Day, everybody! How did you celebrate 3.14? We celebrated BIG in 7th grade this year. We just recently finished our unit on Perimeter (and Circumference), Area, Surface Area, and Volume. It was perfect timing for Pi Day. Not only did Pi Day fall on a Friday this year, but it fell on the Friday before Spring Break. This means that all we did that day was pretty much fuel the [HYPER] fire that was already spreading among our 7th graders.

Our 7th Grade team found and ordered shirts from Amazon. They were a big hit!
During my first period of the day, one of my sweet students brought me a shirt that her mom had sewed for me! It was so cute, and even though we were all so excited to match, I just had to change into the one she brought me. It was just so thoughtful, and not to mention- adorable!
About a week ago, we asked for donations from parents. We asked for sugar cookies, icing, and M&Ms, and holy moly, our parents responded. I ended up with about twenty dozen cookies. A-mazing.
The above picture doesn't even touch all the goodies that were donated. To celebrate the day, we had our students measure and solve for the circumference and area of a cookie and an M&M. Then, they iced their cookie, and found the area of the iced part. Then, they decorated their cookie with M&Ms and had to figure out how much area was NOT covered with M&Ms. They had so much fun with it. Here is one of my students' cookies…
How did you celebrate Pi Day?

Nerd Alert: I'm already pumped for next year's Pi Day, because it will be 3.14.15 which is the first FIVE digits of PI- 3.1415 :)

Happy Weekend!
Happy Spring Break!

My Dog Ate Your Homework

It has been one of "those" Mondays. You know the ones I'm talking about… the ones where you are a day late and a dollar short. As a matter of fact, that has kind of been the last week or so for me. It is apparently that time of year when parents [four days until the end of the nine-weeks] have realized that their child is not performing to the best of his/her ability, and the teacher is to blame for the 'Incomplete' homework assignments in the gradebook , etc. No worries, I'm not here to vent. I'll leave that for my sweet hubby and my Monday night glass of wine.
I am here, however, to explain the title of this post, although I am not sure it actually requires any explanation at all. Let's start from the beginning…

Our sweet Avery is a golden retriever who turned two in January. She is everything we could have ever wanted in a dog. She has the best personality, loves to cuddle, and enjoys long walks on the beach. She runs with me, which we both love, and the best part- OFF LEASH. It really is a game-changer, folks. If you run with a dog, you know what I mean. She really is wonderful. Because she is so wonderful, we get suckered into trusting her and believing she is actually a human. Because Matt and I had a busy weekend which included lots of the Houston Rodeo, including seeing Usher (one word- amazing.) that will be blogged about later and working out at the rodeo (also- later), and because we were going to be gone so much, we felt a little guilty leaving Aves in her kennel. Did I say 'kennel'? I meant deluxe suite hotel of a kennel. I'm not quite sure why we feel so guilty. It must be the face…

Or when she pretends she's sleepy and promises that when we're gone, she is just going to sleep anyway. I mean, what's a girl to do? Apparently, a girl is to trust that sweet face and let her stay out of the kennel and roam the house. We let her do this Friday night, and she did great! She was actually sleeping in her kennel when we got home with the door open. Then, Saturday, when we went to work out, same thing. She was sleeping on the couch and had done great. Not a single thing out of place. Saturday night, third time was a charm, because again, nothing. But then… Sunday happened. While we were at church, she caved. She found one of my student's re-tests and literally tore it to shreds. I'm talking- try to salvage, isn't going to happen, shred. Think she felt bad about it?

The answer is 'yes', she did. This mamma was so mad at her. I even remember when she yawned, I yelled, "No, you are NOT allowed to be tired! You should have been sleeping, and you weren't! Too bad! No yawning!" But… after about three minutes, I had to get over it. What is it about dogs? You just can't stay mad at them. I decided that since it was only a Re-Test (meaning the student can make up to a 70), that this child… no matter how they had actually done… would be getting her 70. She can thank Aves for that one.

There are so many other things going on around here it is a little crazy to even think about. We are about to start another challenge over here at the Bormann house, so stay tuned to hear about that. Also, the rodeo has started up, which means we have been volunteering, enjoying some good ole Texas rodeo-ing, and some stinkin' awesome concerts. More on all of this coming soon!

Hope you are not having "one of those Mondays," but if you are, you aren't alone.
Keep Calm and Tuesday On.

It's Rodeo, Y'all

March in Houston brings one of my very favorite times of year… The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. If you are visiting Houston during March, or if you have lived here all of your life and have never been, it is worth going. Everything about the rodeo just makes you proud to be a Texan and a Houstonian. The people, the clothes, the atmosphere, the extremely reckless (yet extremely talented) cowboys that get thrown off of bulls that are about twelve times their weight, and of course, there are the concerts, both country and otherwise.

If you are planning on attending the rodeo this year, let's talk about rodeo fashion. There is no such thing as "too tacky" at the rodeo. You will "see it all" as I like to say. First, let's talk outfits…

Rodeo Get-Up

Once you have the perfect outfit, you need the perfect pair of boots. We're not talking riding boots, anymore, ladies--cowboy boots. Now, I will say that if you do not have a pair of cowboy boots, you have two options: 1) you can definitely wear your favorite pair of riding boots, and you will not be out of place, or 2) go ahead and make that investment now… you won't regret it. Here are a few options…

So, you may be thinking you are ready to go now, but there is one last thing… turquoise. Don't leave the house without it. Here are some fun and stylish options that are out there now…

Have I convinced you yet?
I sure hope so!
Enjoy, and look fabulous while doing it!
Happy Rodeo season, y'all!
