Second Anniversary

To celebrate, we had an entire day of dates on Saturday. We played 18 holes of golf. We went to lunch. We went to dinner. And, we went to a movie. Quality time is one of our love languages that we both share. So, that's exactly what we did--spent some quality time together. Yesterday, we went to church and then to lunch with our class. We picked up some things from my grandparents' house, which will hit the blog later, and then I cooked Matt his favorite meal. It is a recipe that his grandmother gave to me when we got married. All in all, it was the perfect anniversary weekend.

Two years ago today was the best day of my life. I'm not sure what could top it except for the days our future children are born, God willing, but no plans for that as of now. For now, the day Matthew Bormann and I vowed to be husband and wife in front of a church filled with our family and closest friends, surrounded by God's love, that was the best day of my life. That day was two years ago.

Do you see those flowers? I will never forget them. I remember just staring at them when we were on the altar. I was in awe.

Matt and I shared a first look in the same garden where he had proposed about seven months before. He proposed to me on my 22nd birthday. He took me to the church I had grown up in, the one my parents were married in 30 years prior, the one he knew we would one day get married in. He told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He had asked for my father's permission. Both my earthly father and my Heavenly Father. It was perfect. It was all God's doing. He's amazing like that.

After we shared our first look, we were off to say our vows.

After being pronounced husband and wife, we danced the night away with all of our favorite people.

To quote the song we first danced to...
"and I thought I loved you then."

Happy 2nd Anniversary to my best friend and soul mate.

Thank you to Kelly Hornberger for capturing moments that I will never forget!

Easter Weekend

I am still on cloud nine from this past weekend. I love Easter. I love everything about it. A holiday all about Jesus and getting to spend time with family- what's not to love?

Friday, we slept in a little bit, knowing that we had a very full weekend ahead. As most days off begin, we spent some time outside playing with Avery and enjoying the beautiful spring weather.
We got some things done around the house, packed up ourselves and the car, and we left for the bay.  But, not without a completely full house car.

[Sidenote: my parents are moving. They have to be out of their current house that they have lived in for 16 years on Thursday, yes, that's tomorrow. And, they are not able to get into their new house until the end of May. This results in them moving to and living at the bay house for the next five weeks.]

We tried to help in anyway that we could, so we packed our car full of stuff and dogs. Avery is a diva, and she is not used to having to share, so she claimed a new seat in the car. Not sure how safe it was.

Since we were the first ones to the bay, we enjoyed some time just sitting outside, reading before everyone else got there. As it turned out, however, I didn't have to move for quite a while, because as more people arrived, more chairs just kept getting pulled up into a big circle. It was perfect.
Saturday, both sets of my grandparents arrived early. My dad passed off breakfast duty to Matt, and he passed. He was flipping pancakes like it was his calling. The rest of the day was spent walking with the dogs, going to the beach, laying out, napping, eating, playing 42, egg toss competition, egg dying, napping, and eating. Yes, napping and eating more than once, because it's vacation.

Sunday was a perfect ending to a great weekend. The whole family attended church together. Yes, we took up an entire row. Then, we had a big lunch before heading back home.

I love thinking about the reason we celebrate Easter. Our heavenly Father sent his one and only son to pay for our sins on the cross. He was ridiculed and crucified and died. But the good news? He rose again!!

Matthew 28:1-7
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."
Mark 16:1-7
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?" But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. "Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter as well!

Hello, Spring!

Have you seen this pin? A friend of mine showed it to me and wanted to replicate it, because it is 1) super cute, and 2) selling for $99. I got everything for this wreath on sale (40% off, plus my 15% teacher discount at Michaels) for $22.80. And I actually ended up with one too many apple blossom stems. Here's how to DIY...

What You'll Need:
-Twig Wreath- whatever size you like best (I think mine is a 14")
-Wooden Letter- to match your last name, not mine :)
-2 Hydrangeas- any colors (picking these out took me the longest) I went back and forth on which color(s) I wanted to do, but I love how it turned out. The original one on Pinterest has two green hydrangeas, but I was happy I added more color to it
-1 Apple Blossom stem- I had bought two, but I only used one and I still have one small stem from the first one that I didn't use. If you want yours to have more apple blossoms, then go with 2!
-1-2 Hanging fillers- or other greenery; I was wanting a more airy look, so I went with something lighter. There were four stems on the one filler I got, and I ended up using the whole thing, two on top, two on bottom.
-Hot Glue Gun- this is not included in the $22.80, but if you don't have one, now is the time to invest!

Steps to make your very own:
1. Cut your hydrangea off of their stem, so that you have only about 2 inches left of the stem
2. Place the left over stem into the twig wreath where you want the hydrangea placed; repeat with second hydrangea.
*NO hot glue yet, just in case you change your mind on anything--my rule is to get everything placed and hot glue at the very end!
3. Then, take your filler, and cut each stem off.
4. Stick the end of the filler into the twigs, underneath your hydrangea, and repeat until you are happy with filler.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for your apple blossoms (or other small, spring flowers). The stems you cut from these are a little smaller than the filler, so it will take more.
6. Go back and fill in any spots you think need more, just sticking stems into the twigs.
7. Place your wooden letter where you feel that it should go, across from your arrangement.
8. Hot glue. Wherever you think something could/will fall out/off without it, add some hot glue on the twigs beneath it, and hold the flowers there for a few seconds, and it should stick! As for the wooden letter, hot glue worked for me (so far), but it may need more reinforcing later.

It's amazing what you can do with a twig wreath, faux flowers, and a hot glue gun. Happy Spring DIY-ing!

Any DIY projects in the works for you this spring??
Let me know if you try this one!

Bormanns Take Boston

Well, we went to Boston! Once again, we woke up at an un-human hour to catch our plane to Massachusetts. When I was a freshman in college, my family took a vacation to Boston over Christmas break. It had been a very eventful trip; I was so excited to take Matt back, because he had never been. Plus, he is much more interested in our country's history than me.

When we landed, we were kind of starving since we had been awake for so long. Earlier in the week, one of my students (who used to live in Boston) gave me some restaurant suggestions (that I wasn't sure I would actually take to heart since the student is twelve.) But, we were hungry, and we needed to stretch our legs, therefore, we wanted to eat somewhere within walking distance. It just so happened that one of the student's recommendations was within walking distance, and it had been featured on four different food shows, including Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Boston Burger Company, it was! While walking there, we were stopped by a fireman, who was holding traffic (cars and pedestrians) while a firetruck was being backed into the fire station. When we looked up, we soon realized that it was the same fire station (and team) that had lost two fire fighters a few days prior in an apartment fire. We had seen the story on national news all week, so it was very surreal to see where they were from. Also, it was obvious that they were very loved by all of the flowers that had been placed in front of the fire station by family and locals. It was very sweet.

We split a burger and some sweet potato fries (my fave), and Matt had his first clam chowder chowda.

After lunch, we walked around Copley Square, which was where our hotel was, and shopped. I almost got myself some new Hunter rain boots, but luckily for Matt, they didn't have my size in the color I wanted. Mostly, though, we were on the hunt for some Boston Red Sox gear that we could wear the following night at the baseball game. Allow me to re-phrase... We were on the hunt for some COLD WEATHER Boston Red Sox gear that we could wear the following night at the baseball game.

Later that night, we went to the North End for dinner. Our original plan was to go to Mamma Maria, where apparently we should have made a reservation about eight years ago (okay, not really, but the host and maitre d' did seem to exchange a glance that made us feel about 3 inches tall when we asked for a table for two.) I'm sure it would have been delicious, however, we ended up getting a table at another italian restaurant close by called Prezza, and it was awesome. After eating dinner, our waiter asked us if we wanted dessert. We admitted that we had seen a pastry place close by that we were hoping to go to afterwards. He understood, but convinced us to go to Modern Pastry instead of the place we were going to go because "any real italian in Boston would tell you it was better." It really was delicious. I ate my first cannoli. And it. was. wonderful. If you can't tell, I loved it.

That brought an end to day 1, and we were actually very excited to just get to sleep and then sleep in. And we did just that. We woke up at 8:30, which is sleeping in pretty big time for us since we are early-risers. I kept telling Matt that I wanted to go see the Boston Marathon finish line, so before breakfast, we went on a run through Copley Square, and we crossed the finish line!
[Ignore the poor soul who had their car booted. I have a feeling it ruined someone's morning]

Then, we ran to and through Boston Common (central, public park which is the oldest park in the country) and on to The Paramount for breakfast. It made us feel a little better about indulging in some yummy food since we had run there. I took full advantage. I ordered Whole Grain Texas-style French Toast with a side of berries and bananas. It was just as delicious as it looks.

After breakfast, we headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready for our big day ahead. We were definitely not running quite as fast on the way back to the hotel. Must have been the wind? Okay, or the food... but probably the wind. Let's go with that.

After that, the majority of the day was spent walking the Freedom Trail. I had done part of it back when I was in college, but the ground was covered with snow at that time, so if I am being honest, I was more interested in playing with the snow. But, this time, I enjoyed myself and learning about the history of Boston all over again.

^^See what I mean about caring more about the snow than what we were seeing?? Oh, to be young again.. kidding.

We actually did not make it to the last two stops- the Bunker Hill Monument and the USS Constitution. They were much further away, and it had already been a very long and tiring day. Hopefully, we will get to see those two things at some point. Plus, we had to go get rested up for the Red Sox game. AKA a cannoli happened. And was just as good as the first.

We rested up and bundled up, as it was 37 degrees at the game. Here we are at Fenway Park...

We ended the weekend on Sunday with a church service at Redeemer Fellowship Church. Our church here in Houston has been partnering with Redeemer Fellowship for about a year, so we were very anxious to try out the church while in Boston. We loved it. The people were very welcoming and loved that we came to visit. Also, look at this view... I mean, wow! How great is our God?
If you are still reading, then you are awesome, because this was a long post, but it was a packed weekend. And it was a great getaway for a weekend. Plus, almost two years of marriage is definitely something worth traveling for :)

Are you traveling anywhere anytime soon?
We are done for a while! Promise!
Happy Hump Day!
